Flat Panel Lighting
The past twenty years have seen a lot of advances in the field of energy
efficient light bulbs, first with the innovation of compact fluorescents
and more recently with the introduction of high-power LED bulbs.
However, a new technology called the Organic Light Emitting Diode, a
kind of slim, flexible light emitting panel that can turn any surface
into a kind of virtual window, could finally spell the end for the light
bulb altogether.
When connected to an electricity supply, OLED panels give off a brilliant
white light evenly across its surface. They are so slim, and give off
so little in the way of heat, that they can be applied to virtually
any surface, including floors, walls, furniture, and even clothing.
They are almost a hundred percent energy efficient, and do not heat
up at all even after being on for a long time, and as a result can last
a lot longer than any other type of light, including CFLs and Halogen
bulbs.
Also, the type of light produced by these panels is far more akin to
that of natural daylight, so you could use them to create a virtual
window within a room that had no access to natural light.
The best thing about these lights, other than their versatility, is
that they are more environmentally friendly than any other type of light
currently available, as they are far more efficient and durable than
any other type of light source, and are made entirely from sustainable,
non-toxic materials that can be recycled.
The OLEDs that are currently available are already very efficient, but
their developers believe that they can be made one hundred percent efficient
with further revisions. This would mean that every single unit of electrical
energy would be turned into light energy, with no heat energy being
produced.
The first commercially available OLED product, the LumiBlade, has recently
been launched by Philips. Although they are not all that bright on their
own, when arranged in an array they can light a room much like a window,
and they at least show the versatility of the device, although they
are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.
